Song Premiere: I Feel Such a Longing

Charming and rambunctious, Kyler Mello’s grinning baritone slinks through warm and rattling production. Coming off of 2022’s Eyes and Faces EP, the Oregon-based songwriter has a more tender and bittersweet offering for us. With welcoming and golden finger picked guitar, “I Feel Such a Longing,” finds Mello drifting through the pain and beauty of nostalgia. He dips into AM folk-rock; catchy, but tempered with sorrow. Subtle hints of disquiet ring through the song, glockenspiel pinging around, but slowly warped into unnerving echos. Before finally erupting into an anthemic end, tears in the beer, lighters revealing a crying face sort of final chorus. Mello had this to say about the track:

“As a songwriter one generally hopes to finish ideas at something resembling a halfway decent pace. But a fascinating part of the process, and one that I find myself in frequently, is the notion of “caring for” songs, or the beginnings of songs. Little phrases and ideas, born of emotion or coming in spontaneously from nowhere in particular, can live in compelling infancy for years until they make their purpose known. This song is one of those. This is a heartbreak song, and a regret song, but it is also a song sung in grateful admiration. I had its beginning floating around in my head and scrawled into various notebooks for about five years before I realized what it was about and was able to complete it. I am, as always, incredibly thankful to be able to partake in this form of expression. This song is very close to my heart, and I humbly hope that you enjoy it.”
